The Ou River (Lao: Nam Ou) is a major trade and transport artery in northern Laos. It flows into the Mekong at the old capitol, Luang Prabang, and extends to the north almost to the Chinese border, passing through the old Chinese trade outpost at Phongsali. A fleet of longtail boats plies the river both north and south; recently high-powered speedboats have arrived to accommodate the tourist trade. The Ou River features spectacular karst formations, albino water buffalo, and vast expanses of cloudforest.
